We would rather explain the price than advertise one. A number produced without a survey has nothing behind it, which is how people end up owing more than they were told. These are the factors that move the cost of an Idaho move — itemized up front, fixed once agreed.

01Distance and lane

Your route sets the floor. Our Idaho lanes run from about 350 miles to Utah out to roughly 1,510 miles to Texas. Sharing a trailer with other households costs less than a dedicated truck; a dedicated truck buys you a delivery date instead of a spread.

02Access at both ends

Loading conditions swing the bill more than most people expect. A driveway you can back a fifty-three-foot trailer into is a different job from a third-floor walk-up on a permit-only street. We look at the approach at origin and destination up front so nothing is discovered with the truck already loaded.

03How much packing you want

Packing scope is the lever customers control most directly. Full service is the common choice on interstate lanes because a properly packed carton is the difference between a load that arrives whole and one that doesn't. A split — you do the soft goods, we do glass, art and electronics — is just as workable. Built-to-fit crates for anything oversized are quoted on their own.

04Storage between dates

Few moves go straight from door to door on the same day. Where they don't, we hold the shipment in storage-in-transit under the same inventory, and the cost of those weeks is written into your quote from the start. Climate-controlled space is the sensible choice for wood, leather, and anything with a circuit board.

05Valuation and protection

Coverage is not optional on an interstate move — the federal minimum released-value protection is built into every shipment for free. What you choose is whether to step up to Full Value Protection, which repairs, replaces, or settles at market value and is the sensible call for a high-value load.

Every state has its own access problems, weather windows, and rules. Here's what shapes an Idaho move in practice.

STEP 01

Roads & access

I-84 is the state's main artery through the Treasure Valley and Magic Valley; I-90 serves the Panhandle and I-15 the eastern corridor through Idaho Falls and Pocatello. There is no direct interstate connecting north and south Idaho, so a Boise-to-Coeur d'Alene move routes through Oregon and Washington — a fact that surprises people. Mountain highways like US-95 through the Salmon River canyon are slow and weather-sensitive. Main corridors: I-84, I-15, I-90, US-95.

STEP 02

Timing your move

Peak is June through August and the Treasure Valley books out early, because inbound demand outstrips available crews in summer. Winter moves in the Panhandle and eastern Idaho face real snow and pass closures, particularly Lookout Pass on I-90 and the routes into the mountain valleys. May and September are the sweet spot — mild weather, open passes, and good availability.

Who is moving, and why

The dominant inbound lane is California to the Treasure Valley — households trading Bay Area and Southern California housing costs for Meridian and Eagle. Washington and Oregon contribute meaningfully as well, particularly to Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls. Outbound Idaho moves are still a minority but have grown as Boise-area prices climbed, with Texas, Arizona, and Utah the common destinations.

STEP 04

Licensing to check

Interstate moves out of Idaho are federal: look for an active USDOT number and FMCSA authority. Ours are USDOT #4575745 and MC-1820728. Movers operating only inside the state answer instead to the Idaho Transportation Department, which oversees intrastate motor carriers — a registration that is not authority to take your belongings across the line.

Most overruns on an Idaho move trace back to one of the three below. We ask about all three up front so the price reflects them from the start.

North and south are separate markets

There is no direct interstate route between Boise and Coeur d'Alene. Panhandle moves are typically staged through Spokane, which affects both routing and timing.

Inbound-heavy capacity

Because far more freight comes into Idaho than leaves, outbound consolidated space is usually easy to find. If your dates are flexible, an outbound Idaho move is usually easier to schedule than the reverse.

Mountain valley access

Properties in Sun Valley, McCall, and the Sawtooth valleys often sit on steep or unpaved drives with winter access limits. We survey the last mile and plan a shuttle where needed.

How long does a move from Idaho to Texas take?

Boise to Dallas is roughly 1,600 miles and to Houston about 1,850. Expect 6 to 11 days consolidated or 3 to 4 days on a dedicated truck. Eastern Idaho origins run slightly shorter via I-15.

Can you move between Boise and Coeur d'Alene?

Yes, though the routing is unusual — there is no interstate directly connecting north and south Idaho, so the load travels through Oregon and Washington. It is about 500 road miles despite looking much shorter on a map.

Will winter weather affect an Idaho move?

In the Panhandle and eastern Idaho, yes. Lookout Pass and the mountain routes can close, and mountain-valley properties may be inaccessible to a large truck after heavy snow. Treasure Valley moves are much less exposed. We build a realistic window rather than promising a date.

How far ahead should I book a Boise move?

Six to eight weeks for summer. The Treasure Valley's inbound demand runs ahead of available crew capacity in June, July, and August, and late summer bookings routinely get pushed. Spring and fall can usually be booked three weeks out. Whatever your date, call us before you assume it is too late — we run last-minute long-distance moves every week and will tell you straight away whether we can take yours.

Are moving companies in Idaho required to be licensed?

Yes, under two different regimes. Household goods moving over a state line fall to the FMCSA, which issues the USDOT number and the operating authority that goes with it — we hold USDOT #4575745 and MC-1820728. Check any mover's numbers on the FMCSA's free SAFER lookup before you pay a deposit.

If a company only moves people around inside Idaho, its registration comes from the Idaho Transportation Department, which oversees intrastate motor carriers and stops at the state line — it is no licence to take your belongings interstate. That mismatch is the commonest fault in competitor paperwork customers forward to us. Add two more checks of your own: binding price or revisable estimate, and carrier or broker.
